Description: 
To spend time providing a recreational outing with a child or youth to help expose them to low cost, community recreational activities on a weekly basis for six months. Goal of postion is to engage a child in a positive and healthy activity. 1. Having an understanding of community recreational activities available. 2. Ability to plan age appropriate activities and awareness of low cost community recreational activities and events. 3. Empathetic and able to relate well to people from a variety of backgrounds. 4. Reliable. 5. Flexible to child/family needs. MS Outreach/Demonstrator at The Children’s Museum

Description: 
The MS Society will be offering an educational display at The Children’s Museum during the “Our Body: The Universe Within” exhibit. Volunteers will work with attendees of the exhibit (children, families, students) using simulation devices to help people understand the symptoms of a compromised nervous system. Volunteers should be out-going, entertaining, and knowledge of teaching and MS would be assets. You will receive training from the waterloo district chapter about multiple sclerosis, as well as a a safety training session provided by the museum. To provide non-judgemental telephone based listening to all callers. The goal is to support callers in finding their own soluntions to problems and make appropriate referrals to community agencies, as required. Approximately 30 hours of training provided by staff and experienced volunteers. It includes developing knowledge of active listening, crisis intervention, suicide assessment and prevention and community resources. Being a 24/7 hour operation, a broad range of volunteer shifts and hours are available.

We need people like you - especially guys 16 - 29 years old - to mentor newcomer and at risk youth in your community in 2010. You'll both benefit.
